Even better than advertised. The room was clean and a nice shower/bath, biggest we had on our budget trip. We ate dinner on the terrace which was reasonably priced and excellent. They have a computer system and checkin and out was literally less than a minute. Very close to the ferry to Tarifa in the morning.
The road/walk up to the hotel is not navigable by car, so be prepared for a short, but steep walk with luggage up to the hotel, or pay one of the people offering to help. We were used to lugging our bags by then but it is a little bit of work.
Locatio, location, location. We just went for a couple nights, to visit the medina and surroundings. We were not renting a car, so we needed a hotel close to the ferry and close to the medina. this was perfect! Just a few minutes from the ferry (you can go up some stairs, no need to go around and get lost in the narrow streets for your first time around). Perfect location within the medina for the great experience of tasting Morrocco, its "shopping experience", great cuisine and intense (good) smells everywhere. The cafeteria is beautiful with original morrocan architecture.
Yes, you do have to climb stairs to get to your room, but no big deal. Even the small kids enjoyed it, looking at the stained glass of the staircase. It is getting old and it needs some restoration, but it is still great.
It is clean, comfortable a bit luxurious, far better than many of the Riads. Plenty of hot water.
The breakfast needs improvement.
You will certainly be disappointed if you are looking for 21st century slick hotel facilities, (there is free wifi throughout though) but, slow down - this isn't frantic Europe - enjoy the delights and charms of the staff and of a place where everything is a little different. I can see why some folks find it easy to criticise ( I don't like mosquitoes either but never got any punishing experience with them here) but my standards are not so low I would put up with any old rubbish. My wife and I stayed here in August 2011 and confidently booked to stay again in January 2012 (this time me with our 2 daughters in their 20s). On each occasion we were given a choice of 2 rooms, satisfactorily furnished with adequate supplies. This is not just accommodation - this is a flavour of the past glory of Tanger and to miss it would be to lose out on a special experience. I have no doubt my next trip to this city is likely to involve if not another stay here, most certainly a visit to this hotel. Situated ideally for the Kasbah & Medina - Great value for money !! Perhaps a challenge for you if you have mobility difficulties - no lifts or ramp access a far as I recall.
The location offers breathtaking views of Tangier city and port.
The hotel is very run down and depressing looking on the inside. It's in desperate need of a major makeover to lift the spirit of the hotel and make it more comfy. Apart from the lovely, helpful porter/doorman, none of the other staff smiled or showed any warm hospitality. Think they could do better with the breakfast menu as it was very basic. The coffee tasted like dishwater. Very disappointing.
Claasic hotel witch could be a lot better if they did some refurbishing but otherwise OK.
Stayed on 3rd floor.no water pressure whatsoever for showering.no hot water for showering. Air conditioner which was supposed to function as heater did not work.it only blew cold air. very basic room.only nice part the part on the way to the terrace where you sit to have breakfast. That part of the building is in tradtional moroccan deco.but the view from the terrace is not good.looks out into a port which is dirty and lots of construction. The hotel does not look as nice as in the pictures of the hotel exterior.
Good location in the Medina, convenient for the souks and old town, and for ferries. Inclusive breakfast was simple but adequate.
No bar. On arrival the receptionist apologised that our room was not a good one, but that we would be moved to a better room for our second night of 2. This, although it had a sea view, in fact was smaller and inferior. Other guests appeared to be changing rooms as well as us!Also, on our second evening we went down to dinner in the hotel's restaurant only to find it closed (OK it was a Sunday, but the opening times displayed on the restaurant door made no mention of not being open every day).
If you are looking for an affordable, clean and safe hotel near the Medina then Hotel Continental fits the bill. We were pleased with the location of the hotel (the medina is a 2 minute walk away and the port is in walking distance). Our room was clean and fairly comfortable. Breakfast each morning was a plate full of various breads served with juice and your choice of coffee or mint tea (by the way you must have as many mint teas during your stay as possible - very delicious!) We ate one evening meal in the hotel restaurant. It was good, but a little pricey for the amount and quality of the food.
There are several rooms that have air conditioning - ours did not. It was very hot during the day even with the windows opened. It did cool off at night, but if you are traveling there in the summer, try and get a room with air conditioning.
the location and the antique furniture
television, wifi not working
We came for one day and stayed for three. It is an amazing place, somewhat shabby but romantic and in touch with its exotic and luxurious past. It is in the Medina but accessable by car, it is a place that continues to surprise you, at every turn you find some new delight. Not to be missed is breakfast in what they call the cafeteria, which is actually a beautifully preserved hareem with little secret courtyards and private lounges. The breakfast itself is standard continental but in the most exotic surroundings imaginable. Dinner on the patio overlooking the Tanger bay is also a great experience and the traditional Moroccan food is excellent, probably as good as you will find in Tanger.
Well, the hot water didn't always work but it is one of those places where you kind of expect little plumbing glitches, it becomes a part of its charm. By french standards the plumbing is actually pretty good.
it should not be classified as a 3 star hotel, there was no air condition or fans outside facing windows. unfortunetly your conditions were such that i could not cancel without loosing the whole amount.
Very nice location and good staff at the reception. Traditional hotel.
Breakfast was poor. No water was included in the breakfast and the bottle of 1 1/2 litres was charged for 2 euros. The staff in the breakfast was not polite at all while the breakfast was served 20 minutes later than the starting time.
Convenience of secure parking in outstanding location on the edge of the Medina. Wonderful introduction to Morocco in mosaic breakfast room and bazaar emporium.
Directions to arrive at the hotel were inadequate/over complicated. In essence, need to arrive at old port and then bend back up the hill - but signage is poor/lacking
The walls and floors are covered by arabic stones, very beautifully.
Uneasy to access on foot from the city centre, but it was fair for the price.
